On April 29, 2016, friction stir welding of small-radius large-thickness high strength aluminum alloy cone part is realized successfully through 8 months continuously striving to make technological breakthrough.

Small-radius large-thickness high strength aluminum alloy cone part is the key component of some domestic client. Since the poor quality stabilitylow product qualification rate and other defects of conventional integrally casting forming, through repeated communication with the client, the molding process of the product is finally confirmed and divided into subsection casting +friction stir welding. Friction stir welding technology is applied in the product for the first time, without sophisticated application proposal. For the application of friction stir welding in the product, there are difficulties in the following aspects:

1.Small-radius circumferential “none exit-hole” welding; Due to the inherent feature of equipment, the withdraw distance is short, with high requirement on technological aspect;

2. The rigidity requirement of large-thickness welding; After many test welding, on the basis of fixed welding process parameters, lateral force is bigger, which needs stronger rigid support;

3. Welding procedure; welding procedure is different with machining procedure, which welding process requirement is put in procedure.

Since 8 months strive to tackle key problems of related staff, comprehensive system development is proceeded on equipmentprocedureclampstechnology and other aspects. The first unit FSW equipment of heavy-load withdrawable servo A/C double head is successfully developed. And the successfully welding of core parts verified the stability of equipment and the availability of FSW technology application in the product. The welded products are detected qualified through mechanical property test of conventional parallel sampleX-Ray test.
